A solid rule set is the most vital component of any board game, and it's also the hardest thing to perfect. A single word choice or grammar mistake can result in rules questions from hundreds of players, while others may gloss over it entirely and end up playing the game wrong. The key to clear rules is to focus not just on communicating, but avoiding any miscommunication or potential misunderstanding. At the same time, a good rule book needs to minimize cognitive load and get learning the game out of the way as quickly as possible, so that players can actually play. There are a number of parameters upon which I evaluate and edit rules sets, and unless your rulebook is already exceptional I can almost certainly help you make improvements in this area.
The rulebook services I offer include proofreading, editing, layout, and even writing from scratch, so however far along you are, I can jump in and offer assistance in any step of the rules creation/finalization process!
*Fees depend on rulebook length and type of work requested. Please email me the details of your project, and I will provide you with a quote.
I have been playtesting other designers' games as well as my own on a weekly basis for the better part of a decade, and have refined my approach to provide the most valuable, actional feedback I can. Book a consultation with me, and we'll comb through your game together in fine detail and determine what your next moves are. I can also take and playtest your game for you, in which case I provide extensive written feedback and suggestions, as you'll see in the example below.
*Standard Sessions are 1-2 Hours. Any ideas generated during brainstorming are yours to do with as you wish, and I am always happy to sign an NDA granting you full rights to them.
Most people tend to enjoy game design (the part where you come up with new ideas and try them out), but not so much game development (the part where you flesh those ideas out over many, many playtests and make iterative changes). It's easy enough to design a game in an afternoon, but development can easily take a year or more to complete, so a lot of games just never get finished. If you have too many ideas and not enough time to develop them all, or just want to take some of the weight of development off your shoulders, let me playtest and iterate on your game for you!
*Ongoing support available on a limited basis.
Building prototypes can be very time consuming, even tedious, especially when new components are needed on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Using tools like Illustrator, InDesign, Cardmaker, and TTS Workshop, I've learned to be much more efficient when creating prototypes, and have developed a process for making good quality prototypes in good time. Whether you want a super fancy prototype that looks more publisher/pitch ready, or just need some simple prototypes pumped out on a regular basis, I'm here to help. I can create print files for you, implement your prototype into Tabletop Simulator, or both!
I can also create logos, help with Kickstarter graphics, and help you with the final graphic design/layout for your game if you're looking to publish. See below for examples:
